EMERALD MOUNTAIN GARDEN CLUB
The Emerald Mountain Garden Club is a community social/service organization that has been in existence for nearly fifteen years. In that time it has gone from three to nearly forty members. Although it is a garden club, one need not be an avid gardener to benefit from membership. An appreciation of a well-tended garden or of nature itself and a desire to meet and enjoy neighbors are good reasons for being involved in this club.
Emerald Mountain Garden Club meets the fourth Monday of the month from September to May at 7:00 P.M. in homes and in the Emerald Mountain Clubhouse. Each summer members enjoy several field trips, usually on Saturdays to accommodate those who work. As a group they have gone to places like Petals of the Past in Jemison, the Maxwell Greenhouses, Cindys Antique Home and Garden Shoppe, Hills and Dales Estate in Georgia, Lanark near Prattville, and Oakview Farms Granary. In August the group enjoyed a trip on Montgomerys Harriott II Riverboat that leaves from downtown Montgomery. The evening tour began with dinner on the riverboat and live entertainment during the remainder of the trip.
Emerald Mountain Garden Club has several on-going community projects. This year the club will be responsible for decorating the interior and exterior of the Emerald Mountain Clubhouse. They also sponsor a Yard of the Month program that recognizes outstanding yards from May through October. A yearly event is the Community White Elephant Auction and Dinner usually held in January.
They have financed projects in the past such as having community signs repainted, landscaping the Emerald Mountain Fire Station, and contributing to neighborhood functions. Recent projects include donating $1,000 to the library fund for the new Redland Elementary School and buying and installing a bronze piece of statuary on the Parkway near the tennis courts.
Funds for their projects come from several sources. Each holiday season they make and sell large bows for mailboxes or other outdoor/indoor decorating. The White Elephant Auction and Dinner also brings in money for club projects. A major fundraiser conducted several years ago was preparing, printing, and selling A Taste of Emerald Mountain, a cookbook.
Programs for meetings this year include learning about herbs and the history of their use, making hanging pansy balls, making holiday swags for mailboxes, visiting Southern Homes and Gardens for an update on this years holiday trends, enjoying a Christmas party and holiday decoration exchange, learning about birds and birdhouses, enjoying heirloom and pass along plants, seeing secret gardens on Emerald Mountain, and exchanging plants.
Membership fees are $10.00 per family per year. If you are interested in being a part of this Emerald Mountain tradition call Mary Ann Klatt at 567-2775. We hope to see you at the next meeting of the Emerald Mountain Garden Club!
